RADON CAN HARM YOU
ABOUT RADON
Picture
Radon is an invasive killer! Radon is
an invisible, odorless, colorless,
radioactive gas. Radon is a carcinogen
that causes lung cancer in humans.

Picture
Radon is produced in the soil around homes and buildings. It seeps from the soil and enters buildings through normal cracks and crevices.

Picture
Lungs are susceptible to radon. Radon
is breathed-in as radioactive particles that
enter the lungs, attach to and damage the
lung lining and DNA.

Radon is the leading cause of lung         cancer in nonsmokers and 2nd               leading cause in smokers. Every
   year 21,000 Americans die from
                                  radon-induced lung cancer.

"RADON CAN HARM YOU!" PROJECT
The Utah Radon Coalition and Southeast Utah Health Department know the risk of radon exposure and radon-induced lung cancer is high in Carbon, Emery and Grand Counties. These risks include:

  • Elevated levels of radon producing materials have been found in the soil in each of the counties and two of the counties  have been deemed EPA Radon 1 Zones, indicting high radon levels that predict radon will be found in homes.
  • Radon testing and mitigation are extremely low in all three counties.
  • Adult smoking rates in the three counties are the highest in Utah.
  • The three counties have the highest incidence of lung cancer and lung cancer mortality in the state.
  • There is an abundance of cancer survivors in the counties, many who may have been treated with radiation or other treatments that cause them to be susceptible to secondary cancers or recurrence of their primary cancer if exposed to radon.

We also know that the risks of radon can be avoided through radon awareness, testing and mitigation. That's why, along with our partners at Huntsman Cancer Institute, Utah Department of Environmental Quality Radon program, Utah Department of Health Environmental Epidemiology Program and AARP-Utah, we are conducting our "Radon Can Harm You!" project.
PROJECT SPECIFICS
Radon testing is an important means by which families can avoid radon exposure. As part of the project, from November 1, 2021 to February 28, 2022, we are offering free radon tests to residents of Carbon, Emery and Grand Counties (apply below).

Testing is the first step in protecting your family from radon. Click here for a personal story that illustrates the importance of testing.

Testing is easy and uncomplicated. Click here for details about how to set the test.

Free testing is offered to all residents who live in the home to be tested. Real estate transactions do not qualify for free testing. Testing will be overseen by radon contractor members of the Utah Radon Coalition who employ certified radon measurers.

Lastly, cancer survivors are very important to us and we know that as shown here, while your cancer may have been cured, due to having had cancer, other aspects of your life may be difficult.
That’s why, as part of our "Radon Can Harm You!" project, we are offering free customized cancer survivorship information to cancer survivors and their caregivers. Coupled with your oncologist care plan, citing experience and evidence based information, the resources we provide will help survivors and their caregivers navigate through physical, emotional, psychosocial and financial challenges resulting from diagnosis and treatment.

Please indicate on the test application if you are interested in receiving free customized cancer survivorship information.
