ABOUT NATIONAL RADON ACTION MONTH
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Surgeon General know that radon is dangerous. They are aware radon is a carcinogen that causes lung cancer in humans. That radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. That radon kills an average of 22,000 Americans each year. And that families are mostly jeopardized by radon exposure in their homes. They also know that exposure to radon is a threat that is completely preventable with a simple test and and well-established venting techniques. That's why they designated January as National Radon Action Month (NRAM). NRAM provides a fresh opportunity at the beginning of each new year for all Americans to protect their families by becoming more aware of radon, testing their home, and mitigating radon if the test finds a high level of radon.
ABOUT UTAH RADON ACTION MONTH 2021
Radon testing is an important means by which Utah families can avoid radon exposure. As their Radon Action Month 2021 project, from December 1, 2020 to January 31, 2021, the Utah Radon Coalition (URC) is offering free radon testing for homeowner households in six Salt Lake County cities with a history of high radon readings. Those cities are: Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Herriman, Millcreek, Sandy, and South Jordan.
The URC Low-Income Radon Mitigation Assistance program will also provide low to no cost radon mitigation services to four low-income homeowner households located within the project area whose homes are measured by the free tests to have high radon levels.
Free testing is offered to homeowners who reside in the home to be tested. Real estate transactions do not qualify for free testing. Testing will be overseen by radon contractor members of the Utah Radon Coalition who employ certified radon measurers.
