​Why We Created This Program

​Radon levels change with the seasons, and a single short‑term test can’t show the full picture. Families deserve results that reflect how radon behaves over time, not just during a few days of testing.

The Seasonal Testing Program gives Utahns a clearer, more accurate understanding of their home’s radon level without pressure, fear, or unnecessary cost.

How the Program Works

1. Start With a Short‑Term Test

A short‑term test (2–7 days) provides a quick snapshot of your home’s radon level. It’s the simplest way to begin and helps determine whether additional testing is needed.

2. If your Short‑Term Result Is Under 8.0 pCi/L​

​Single short-term test results at these levels are not the full picture. To understand your true annual exposure, depending on the time of year and their capacity to bridge seasons, you will be provided one of the following:

• Long‑Term Test (6 Months or More) 

​       The most accurate method. Best when the test period will cross multiple seasons.

• Moderate ‑Term Test (Up to 90 Days) 

​​        A solid choice when the test bridges two seasons, improving accuracy over short‑term testing.​

3. If your Short‑Term Result Is 8.0 pCi/L​ or Higher

This is an elevated result. It does not require panic, but it does deserve attention.

​At this level, the reading is unlikely to be a seasonal artifact. Families should review both the test result and their circumstances, including time spent in lower levels, children’s bedrooms, ventilation patterns, and other factors, before deciding whether to mitigate.

​If you decide to mitigate, we will provide a list of certified, Navigator‑approved mitigators who meet our standards for quality and transparency.

​A Note About Safety

Radon is a long‑term, cumulative exposure risk. It does not behave like carbon monoxide or a gas leak. Waiting for the results of a seasonal test or taking time to make an informed mitigation decision is not dangerous.
