ABOUT RADON
"RADON CAN HARM YOU!" PROJECT
The Utah Radon Coalition and Southeast Utah Health Department know the risk of radon exposure and radon-induced lung cancer is high in Carbon, Emery and Grand Counties. These risks include:
We also know that the risks of radon can be avoided through radon awareness, testing and mitigation. That's why, along with our partners at Huntsman Cancer Institute, Utah Department of Environmental Quality Radon program, Utah Department of Health Environmental Epidemiology Program and AARP-Utah, we are emphasizing that every household in the three-county area should test their house for radon.
- Elevated levels of radon producing materials have been found in the soil in each of the counties and two of the counties have been deemed EPA Radon 1 Zones, indicting high radon levels that predict radon will be found in homes.
- Radon testing and mitigation are extremely low in all three counties.
- Adult smoking rates in the three counties are the highest in Utah.
- The three counties have the highest incidence of lung cancer and lung cancer mortality in the state.
- There is an abundance of cancer survivors in the counties, many who may have been treated with radiation or other treatments that cause them to be susceptible to secondary cancers or recurrence of their primary cancer if exposed to radon.
